Wilma Lorene Campbell

Funeral services for Wilma Lorene Campbell will be held Monday, November 7, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Skyview Baptist Church in Okemah. Interment will follow at the Morse Cemetery in Okemah. Wilma Lorene Campbell was born on a ranch in the community of Hickory in Pontotoc County to Rube and Bell Peterson. She passed away, Thursday, November 3, 2011 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 86. When Lorene was five years old, her family moved to the community of Laxton where she finished the sixth grade. She and her family then moved to Galey, a small community in Pontotoc County where she graduated from grade school. Lorene later graduated from Asher High School in Pottawatomie, County in May of 1943 and later graduated from East Central State College in Ada with bachelor degrees in Science and Home Economics with a minor in Business. In 1948 she took a job at Bearden High School teaching home economics, shorthand, typing and bookkeeping. She taught there for 18 years. Lorene helped sponsor the junior and senior classes having lead senior trips to Colorado, Florida and Missouri. In June of 1956 in Okemah; she married Floyd Campbell. Mr. Campbell was a teacher at Hannah and later became the Bearden School principal. They were married for 43 years until his death in July of 1999. In 1963 Lorene was chosen Teacher of the Year for Okfuskee County. In 1971 she received her Masters Degree in Secondary Education from East Central University. In 1967 Lorene took a job at Okemah High School, teaching full time home economics. During this time she organized FHA (Future Homemakers of America) for the first time in Okemah Public Schools. In 1982 she began teaching the fifth grade and in 1987 she decided to retire after teaching for 43 years. Lorene was active in Retired Educators Organization. She was named “very important member” by the Okfuskee County retired educators. Lorene and Floyd were also charter members of the Skyview Baptist Church in Okemah which she enjoyed very much. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Cecil and two brothers. Survivors include her 4 sons, Jimmy Campbell and wife Lee of Oklahoma City, Ron Campbell of Tulsa, Ronnie Campbell and wife Theresa of Okemah and Tim Campbell and wife Erin of Oklahoma City; one daughter, Cathy Webb and husband Mitch of Okemah; 8 grandchildren, Larry, Michael and Chad Campbell, Michelle Daily, Karen Vanpelt, Sara Hammond, Megan Webb and Hunter Webb; and 17 great-grandchildren. Serving as active pallbearers will be: Cliff Nichols, Steve Walker, Steve Williams, James Williams, Stanley Peterson and Kurt Titsworth. Honorary bearers include, Claude Palmer, Roscoe Neal, Lance Warn, Jack Choate and Allen Johnston. Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah.
