Nelda Raye Curry

Funeral services for Nelda Raye Curry will be held Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Okemah. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery also in Okemah. Nelda Raye Curry was born on January 16, 1935 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Ray Taylor and Elida (McCombs) Taylor. She passed away Tuesday November 26, 2013 in Dallas, Texas at the age of 78. Nelda Raye moved to Okemah with her parents Ray and Elida Taylor as a young child and lived there for her entire life until she moved to Rambling Oaks Assisted living in Frisco, TX. She was a 1953 graduate of Okemah High School She was married to Mac Curry for 53 years who preceded her in death in October of 2006. Nelda Raye was a great mother and grandmother who also loved spending time with her friends. She especially enjoyed her time at the Okemah Lake in the house that she and her husband built and spent many hours on their pontoon boat enjoying the scenery. She was usually the life of the party and had a way of lighting up the room when she came in. She was the Editor of The Okemah News Leader and then opened Nelda Raye’s Boutique on Main Street in Okemah. She also owned Curry Feed and Seed with her husband and in 1972 she was appointed to the Commission on the Status of Women by Gov. David Hall. Anyone who knew Nelda knew how proud she was of her children who survive her; Craig Curry and his fiancé Michelle Taylor of Frisco, TX, Lisa Stubbe and her husband Dean Stubbe of Frisco, TX and Gina Austin and her husband David Austin of Edmond, OK. Surviving their “Nana” are Hunter Curry, Taylor Vaughn, Colin Austin, Cameron Austin, Nicholas Curry, Macy Curry and Maggie Curry. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Teddy Curry and his wife Janice Curry of Okemah, OK. Hunter Curry, Colin Austin, Cameron Austin, Nicholas Curry, Pat Smith and Bob Reilly will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Martin, Ray White, Bob Scully, Jerry D. Smith, Jimmy Bishop, Mike Brock and Jay Stovall. Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah and officiated by Rev. Jeannie McMahan. Family will be at the funeral home to greet friends Saturday before the service from 12:00 – 2:00 PM. Donations may be made to the Okemah Alumni Association and the Okemah Public School Foundation.
